Fieldnotes Graduate Speaker Series
This week’s speaker is MA student Mariana Chajon Oliveros. Their talk, titled "Atmospheric Racism: History and Daily Life in Musa Okwonga's In the End, It Was All About Love," analyzes the idea of ‘Black gravity’ in Okwonga’s text. They argue that by pointing toward particular instances of ‘Black gravity’ (or an experience of racism fueled by a history of discrimination that does not necessarily stem from a direct act, person or system) in Okwonga’s novel, a new way of viewing racism emerges—one that is “atmospheric” and “permeative” rather than systemic or active.
If the talk sounds interesting to you, please come and engage with Mariana’s ideas. We’re very excited to learn more about Mariana’s research.
While we encourage in-person attendance, please contact us for a Zoom invitation for those with scheduling conflicts.
