30-years of Exercise and Aging: Prescription for Successful Aging
This presentation will describe some of the research on the effects of aging on the exercise response and decline in capacity of the cardiorespiratory system (aerobic fitness), and on muscle strength, and how these physiological changes predict losses of function and independence in older age. On the brighter side, the evidence of the adaptability of older adults to aerobic exercise training and resistance training will be reviewed. Don will present the scientific research informing the Physical Activity Guidelines for Older Adults (released in 2011), and recommendations/prescription of effective cardiorespiratory and muscle exercise programs.
