A woman, famous as a mathematician and philosopher in a patriarchal age, martyred in 415 CE by a gang of Christian monks, she has, over the centuries, attracted treatment by fanciful novelists and pamphleteers, storytellers and filmmakers. We try to separate fact from fiction.
