During her Ph.D., she focused on engineering gene therapy vectors for liver cirrhosis and colon cancer treatment. Interested in gene expression regulation and cell survival mechanisms, she pursued a postdoc at NYU, investigating heat shock protein regulation. Her research continued at Dr. Robert Singer’s lab, where she developed innovative methods for visualizing mRNA molecules. Maria established her lab at McGill University in 2019, studying mRNA life cycles and their role in age-related neurodegeneration.
